Senior Carbon Projects Manager

Location: Sydney or Melbourne hybrid (flexible)

Purpose of role

The Senior Carbon Projects Manager will lead the identification, assessment, design, registration, and management of carbon projects for Climate Positive.

Key responsibilities

Carbon Project Identification and Management

  • Work with key stakeholders and partners to identify and support the acquisition and ongoing management of carbon projects.
  • Undertake carbon project development feasibility assessments against approved methodologies, particularly Environmental Planting and the forthcoming IFLM method.
  • Develop carbon project documentation and liaise with the Clean Energy Regulator and auditors for the registration of the carbon projects and the issuance of Australian Carbon Credit Units.
  • Lead the development of carbon projects and overall property management plans including developing property specific management plans that identify key assets (built and natural) and provide management direction on habitat protection, pest plant and animal control and property maintenance.
  • Identifying other carbon development opportunities and/or environmental investment/offset benefits within the estate.
  • Working closely with the Land Operations Manager to identify and assess potential property purchases.

Environmental Management

  • Take on lead responsibility for the development of management plans for the land assets, and any other assets, in close consultation with the Land Operations Manager.
  • Develop collaboratively with the Land Operations Manager, management plans (including agricultural, fire, infrastructure, pest/weed, and livestock management) for each property acquired or managed, ensuring these are fully costed and approved for implementation.
  • Liaise with natural resource management and conservation researchers to carry out property specific research.
  • Liaise with local Indigenous groups, adjoining property owners, local authorities, catchment management authorities and other key stakeholders as required.

Human Resources

  • Recruit, manage and develop staff and contractors responsible for delivering land management and land acquisition functions.

General Management

  • Managing the overall financial functions for the business unit (in close collaboration with the CFO) – that is, preparing annual budgets, KPI’s, progress reports · Risk management -preparation of risk management plans

Other duties

Fulfil other duties as required by management and other department personnel as requested/required.

The successful candidate will have sound business acumen and conceptual thinking skills whilst being passionate about being part of a high performing team that has a reputation and track record within the carbon market. Key attributes include:

Your Skills

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications, or lived experience in the sustainable agriculture industry is an advantage.
  • Experience managing and coaching employees as part of a small team.
  • Comfort with Microsoft suite and CRM systems.
  • Basic skills in mapping systems like QGIS and/or willingness and capacity to quickly upskill in this space is desirable.
  • An understanding of sustainable land management strategies and the agricultural sector, with the ability to communicate key principles with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to build effective relationships across business units.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with experience preparing and delivering compelling, engaging and informative presentations to management and strategic partners.
  • The ability to work on multiple priorities and tasks is essential.
  • A strong interest in environmental and public good outcomes.
  • Previous experience with Emissions Reduction Fund/Carbon Farming advantageous.
  • Capacity to travel on a semi-regular basis.

Your experience

  • 5+ years’ experience identifying, developing and executing strategic partnerships.
  • Experience in the development and approval of new business models, structures and commercial offerings.
