  • Climate Positive represents TEM’s origination division and is responsible for sourcing, developing and managing carbon projects, with established project portfolios split between its domestic and international operations.
  • Climate Positive’s origination pipeline is comprised of Australian Human Induced Regeneration HIR/IFM and environmental plantings, and International REDD+, Cookstoves and Blue Carbon projects located across APAC.
PNG Improved Cookstove Project

The PNG Improved Cookstove Project promotes Healthier Homes and Healthier Forests by implementing a clean cooking program for hundreds of thousands of households across the Highlands, Papua New Guinea. This TEM-developed project is the first carbon finance cookstoves project to be implemented in the country, where over 80% of all households still rely on traditional open fire cooking.

Your team

The TEM PNG Cookstoves Project – In Country Project Manager is an integral part of the Climate Positive Team with the direct reports being the
Field Manage, Operations Manager and Office Assistant.

Reporting line

The role reports to the Director of International Projects and is a member of the Climate Positive Team.

Purpose of role

As TEM implements this carbon finance project delivering cookstoves to local communities throughout the Highlands region, the role of In Country Project Manager will be required to oversee the smooth running of all aspects of the project.

Your responsibilities
  • Lead the development of TEM’s PNG Cookstove project
  • Work with key internal and external stakeholders, including TEM management, TEM PNG Team and Field Staff, local landowners and governmental departments
  • Take on lead responsibility for the development of management plans for the project implementation, in close consultation with Operations Manager
  • Develop collaboratively with the Operations Manager management plans for:
    • The logistical distribution of 100,000 cookstoves in the Southern Highlands Province
    • Liaising with local landowner groups and communities
    • Risk management – preparation of risk management plans
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager, IT & Data Manager, Field Manager and Staff and their respective teams
  • Establish project plans, tasks, resources, and ownership to ensure timelines are met
  • Identify and manage costs associated with project budgets
  • Coordinate internal and external resources for the planning and execution of different project phases Provide timely status reports and summaries including scope/schedule/quality risks, resource allocation and impact
  • Create and document new processes and standard operation procedures as required
  • Oversee the end-to-end logistics for events in multiple different locations
Other duties

Fulfil other duties as required by management and other department personnel as requested/required.

Your skills & experience

The successful candidate will have strong business acumen and conceptual thinking skills whilst being passionate leading and developing high performing teams and brings a reputation and track record as a recognised leader.

Key attributes include:
  • 10+ years of experience in a supervisory project management role in Papua New Guinea (or comparable developing country)
  • Experience as the Project Manager for a previous Improved Cookstoves project (preferable)
  • Degree or Diploma educated is desirable
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Negotiation skills for dealing with external suppliers
  • Problem solving skills
  • Financial management skills
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, and remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • A passion for sustainable development and a real desire to make a difference in this field
  • Competent in the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Zoom and Teams
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing and the ability to travel domestically
