Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM) wins Environment + Energy Leader Award for first-of-its-kind Laos Induction Cookstove project

Today, leading Asia-Pacific carbon offsetting solutions provider, TEM, announced its Laos Induction Cookstove project – a first-of-its-kind for the region – has been named Top Project of the Year at the prestigious Environment + Energy Leader Awards. TEM was recognised in the Environmental Impact category of the awards, which celebrate exceptional advances made in the realms of environmental, sustainability, and energy management.

TEM’s Laos pilot project utilises cutting-edge e-cookstove technology from Australian company, ATEC, to improve environmental and health issues relating to smoke inhalation in Laos and produce data-verified, Gold Standard carbon credits. Each induction cookstove contributes to an estimated emissions reduction of 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, which totals over 163 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent across the project.

“We are honoured to be recognised at the Environment + Energy Leader Awards for our Induction Cookstove Project in Laos,” said Jessica Dwyer, CEO, TEM. “It is a testament to our commitment to developing high-quality carbon offsetting projects, which contribute to real progress in combating climate change, alongside providing community social, economic and health benefits, and helping to preserve our planet for future generations.”

The induction cookstoves replaced traditional open-fired cooking methods, fuelled by timber, charcoal or gas, which not only reduces carbon emissions, but also reduces smoke inhalation, providing health benefits within the households who participated in the project, in particular, supporting the health outcomes of women and children.

“We are very excited to work with TEM to bring ATEC’s high-quality IoT induction cookstoves to Laos,” says ATEC CEO Ben Jeffreys, “with this we will be able to support households adopt low-emissions cooking while also providing data-verified carbon credits out to international buyers with great co-benefits around health and poverty.”

Charcoal is the most widely used fuel for cooking in Laos and has contributed to high rates of deforestation and environmental degradation across the country. The World Bank reported that household air pollution from cooking over open fires is the top health-risk in Laos, and according to the World Health Organisation, household air pollution was responsible for an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally per year in 2020, including over 237,000 deaths of children under the age of five.

When assessing the project, the Award judges said: “The project’s focus on replacing a significant driver of deforestation is highly sustainable. The potential for health improvements and reduced time-gathering biofuel further strengthens its sustainable impact. This promotes health benefits through smoke-free environments.”

The judges added: “TEM has done great work to tailor the technology, integrate data monitoring, and collaborate with the community to overcome challenges. The company’s clear emphasis on addressing the health impacts of indoor air pollution is a standout element. This demonstrates a commitment to improving lives alongside achieving environmental goals. It sets a commendable standard for similar projects globally.”
